Automated Inotropy and Chronotropy Screens in Engineered Human Myocardium

Engineered tissue surrogates offer an animal-free testbed for safety and efficacy screens of cardio active compounds. Standard organ-bath methods are well established but require significant amounts of tissue handling by expert personnel making them prohibitively costly for large scale screening campaigns. Over the past years we have developed and established a novel multi titer plate that allows to make, grow, and analyze up to 48 tissue constructs in parallel. Analysis and stimulation can be done video-optically, sterility can be maintained unlike in organ bath measurements multiple analysis long-term culture and treatment period can be taken.

Engineered Human Myocardium (EHM) in multititer plate as “Non-Animal Technology (NAT)” for safety and efficacy screens in drug development.

autoOrgan.3D is a prototype for fully-automated generation, maturation, and analysis of Engineered Human Myocardium (EHM), Engineered Skeletal Muscle (ESM) and Engineered Connective Tissue (ECT).

3D Extrusion Bioprinting

The driving force of our research is to bring our research from the lab into the clinic, as currently under way with our engineered heart muscle patches. To gain flexibility in design and individualization of large patches we are developing a 3D extrusion bio-printing system. The aim is to create patches made up of interwoven muscle fibers with defined force pattern.
